White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo
Like many people around the world at this time, I have been horrified at the death of George Floyd, a young African-American man who died when a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly 8 minutes and 46 seconds. During this time, George Floyd said 'I can't breathe' multiple times and cried for his mother before becoming unresponsive. Even then, the officer refused to remove his knee.
George Floyd's death has become a tipping point. Mass demonstrations are now being held around the world to show that Black Lives Matter. Now more than ever it feels important to become educated, to learn about the prejudice, struggle and systemic abuse suffered by black people. To get started, I looked at The Key Bookstore, an afrocentric, interactive, online bookstore that have published a helpful booklist for white people to understand racism. I chose to read 'White Fragility' from the list by Robin DiAngelo.
This book made for uncomfortable reading.
But nonetheless, is a must read.
Robin DiAngelo, Professor of Whiteness Studies coined the term 'White Fragility' to describe the uncomfortable feelings white people, particularly white, 'liberal' people have when confronted with racist behaviour. The book discusses the history of racism, the systems and pillars of society that are in place that work against People of Colour, white privilege and white people's response to racism.
It is an important book and as I say a very uncomfortable book, but for once, this is really not about me and my feelings. So I'm going to shut up and try and learn
Please do read this book and or any of the other books from the Key Boosktore's reading list. I am going to continue to read more from the Booklist amongst other books.
Thank you
